Plan ahead with a meeting:
Before any fuel hose is connected, the crew must have a meeting. This talk should include everyone involved. They will discuss the entire operation from start to finish. The plan should cover the amount of fuel, the pumping speed, and the emergency steps to take if something goes wrong. Good communication at this stage sets a strong foundation for a safe operation.
Check the equipment and area:
A physical check of the bunkering area is a must. All scuppers, which are drains on deck, should be plugged to stop any spilled fuel from going into the sea. All fuel tank lids must be shut and sealed properly. Ensure the equipment, like hoses and valves, is in good condition. Look for any signs of wear or leaks. Confirm that emergency shut-off systems work.
Use clear signals:
Agree on simple, clear start and stop signals with the fuel supplier. These signals are usually by radio or whistle. Everyone must understand these signals without any confusion.
